Chapter 10

Every part of him wanted to lie. Look her in the eye and blatantly withhold the truth.

“Why would you ask me that, sweetheart?”

Her blue gaze was direct, and clearer than it had been since that awful day. Evie had used some of her magic potion on Imogen as well, apparently. “I feel it. I can’t tell you how, but I know he’s not with me anymore, at least not in this world.”

That was impossible. Nonsense. Yet Mac’s heart skipped in response. He’d had a similar feeling when Evie left him. Of course he knew she was still alive, but he felt her absence before anyone had the nerve to tell him she was gone. They’d lied to him then, told him she was with other patients, or that she was on assignment, but he knew. Even as friends looked him in the eye and told him otherwise—just so he’d want to live—he’d known that she wasn’t coming back. Whether he gave up or went on was up to him.

And it should be up to Imogen. To hell with the Wardens. The information Imogen carried was not more important than the truth. Her husband had died for that information. Mac had almost died for it as well. He’d married a woman he didn’t even love to protect it.

He didn’t even know what it was.

He was done lying to protect it.

“He’s gone, Genny. I’m sorry.”

She nodded—one last moment of stoicism before tears filled her eyes. She began to weep, great racking sobs that came from the bottom of her soul and shook her entire body. It had to pain her to cry like that. Every tear had to feel as if it were ripping the wound in her torso wide-open.

Mac took a cushion from another chair and pressed it against her front. He didn’t have to say anything. She wrapped her arms around it, holding it tight as she turned to her side, her breaths coming in ragged gasps.

Nell woke up, turning a startled and horrified gaze to her brother. Mac shook his head. Nell’s shoulders slumped briefly. Then she got up and left the room. Mac followed, giving Imogen the privacy to mourn her husband.

In the corridor they encountered Evie. She was rumpled, dark braid mussed and loose, hair curling wildly around her head. She had sleep wrinkles on her left cheek. “What’s wrong?” she demanded.

“Mac just told Imogen— Ow! Bloody hell, Gav!”

He refused to feel guilty. He hadn’t punched her that hard, and it was only in the arm.

Evie’s eyes narrowed. She was alert now. “Told Imogen what?”

“Something she deserved to know,” he replied.

She stared at him.

He stared back.

“Really?” Dark brows knitted and rose. “You’re not going to tell me?”

“No. I’m not.” It wasn’t because he was particularly cruel, though there was a certain satisfaction in knowing something she did not, no matter how awful it was, but he wasn’t about to tell her that Imogen’s husband was dead, because then she’d want to know why he had married her so slapdashedly and then he’d have to tell her that he was working for W.
